The Wire of Death
In 1915 the Germans constructed an electric fence for 125 miles along the Belgian border with the Netherlands. The purpose was to prevent crossings of the border: volunteers for the Belgian army via England , spies , clandestine post deliverers , smugglers , refugees , resistance fighters . It also needed less German soldiers to guard the Belgian-Dutch border. Estimates suggest as many as three thousand people were electrocuted by the fence.
