Description: This item came from an Army pilot. This is the first one of these that I have ever seen--and I have been in or around Army Aviation since 1966. I have provided some good photos. In one of the photos on the side of the tube, you will see "H20 Flow" and with an arrow pointing to the right. I took photos of the label and you can read it, but will make some points here. The maker of this device is Tech Supply of Virginia or TSV. Doing a Google search could not find anything to indicate they were still in business
A friend did a more detailed look see and here is the info he provided to me:
I decided to do a little searching about that piece, I dont think that company exists under that name anymore but I found a DoD study about something they called a Personal Water Purification Straw made by TSV and the study was done back in 2000 to see the bacterial efficiency. They had a line drawing breakdown of the item and it was the similar shape to the item you showed me in the pics. Showed there was a Iodine filtration section inside the unit.
So it appears that the item was under test and that the pilot I got it from was a test participant. If you look at the contents of the cylinder they say that the active ingredient is 40 % iodine. So you see there are two end caps. The large cap would be the end tipped into the water you wanted to drink. The other end is where you would drink from Note that there are some pretty stringent cautions---but I guess if you are about to die of thirst---this would be a better alternative. The tube does NOT feel hollow, so I expect that the original contents are still in there. I have not removed either of the end caps.
I think this is a fairly rare item and hope that someone would think a good addition fo their survival collection. Please handle with care.
