Here is a very nice find, Peninsula Golf and Country Club Trophy Box. This is a very nice cigarette/jewelry box, made by Poole Silver Co. The box is in very good condition with no dents or tarnish. The decanter was lightly cleaned to remove years of neglect. Top has a brass button that is stamped Peninsula Golf and Country Club, the etching reads: P.G. & C.C. Invitational Tournament 1959, Presidents Flight Sixth Place. The Peninsula Golf and Country Club was founded in 1911 as The Beresford Country Club. Many features of the club grounds were different than they are today. The first Clubhouse, which was later used as a residence for the club manager, was located where the maintenance facility stands today. Following a groundbreaking ceremony on July 4, 1913, the Clubhouse was open for members on New Years Eve 1915. The course measured 6012 yards and the only trees of any significance were the eucalyptus that ringed the course and the double row that ran north from the west side of the driving range. There were open creeks that ran from the 15th and 4th holes that joined together near the driving range and from there, ran to the bay. The tennis courts were completed at the same time as the original golf course, and have been located at their present position from the beginning. In 1920, The Beresford Country Club President Walter Stettheimer traveled to Chicago and engaged famed golf course architect Donald Ross to completely redesign the Beresford course. Ross did travel to California and his visit was highlighted in a 1922 San Francisco Examiner article. He completely re-routed the course, designed distinctive bunkering and greens and added 300 yards to the card. Ross attempted to secure other jobs in California but was unsuccessful and today The Peninsula Club remains the only Donald Ross course on the West Coast. His final contribution to the Club was the personal recommendation of fellow Scot Willie Nicoll for the head golf professional’s job, a position Nicoll held for 30 years. The Club survived a decline in membership in the 1930’s and early 1940’s. Many of the members were San Francisco residents and Helen Lengfeld and Ben Follett were instrumental in purchasing memberships for as little as so they could be reissued to local San Mateo residents. The date chosen for the prospective member picnic and golf outing was December 7, 1941. Somehow the Club survived WWII and after selling 50 acres of Club’s land, forcing rerouting of the course near number six, the Club gradually got back on a sound financial footing. Over the years there have been changes to the Club’s grounds, most notably the addition of the front parking lot and moving the main entrance from the north side to the east side in concert with the new parking lot. This move also resulted in the removal of one of the original par three holes designed by Ross. A total renovation and seismic retrofit of the Clubhouse was completed in 1994-1995. As with the golf course renovation that would follow, the Membership as committed to keep operations going during the year and a half long renovation, without ever missing a meal period. An extensive tree-planting program over the years has added many tree varieties to include; redwood, oak and plum to the Club grounds. The course always played firm and fast in the summer, and the poa annua greens were renowned for their quick speed. Work on the golf course master plan was begun in 1995. Ron Forse, a noted Donald Ross restoration expert was hired as architect, and an extensive drainage plan was incorporated into the plan. The membership approved the plan in 2000 and work began on the back nine in 2001. In order to ensure that the Members never missed a day of golf, work on the front nine began in April 2002, following the reopening of the renovated back-nine. The full 18 holes opened for play on April 4, 2003, following an official ribbon cutting ceremony. The golfing Membership of The Peninsula Golf & Country Club is limited to 350 Proprietary Members. This cigarette/jewelry box would make a classy desk top piece or a great addition to your golf collection.
